The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Extraordinary Summit, set for Harare, Zimbabwe on January 31, 2025, would focus on the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) issue, according to Prof Amon Murwira, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

 In an interview with the media Hon. Prof. dr. Amon Murwira said, "As you are aware, there have been negative developments in the east of the DRC, including a lot of violence and conflict, and you may recall that His Excellency hosted another summit on this subject, which was to extend the mission of Summit DRC, but now the Extraordinary Summit is for Heads of State and Government to debate and make decisions on peace efforts in the Eastern DRC." We expect Heads of State and Government from all SADC countries to attend this summit, which will take place on Friday, January 31, 2025.

 "So we are now fully prepared for this conference. His Excellency, President Mnangagwa, as Chairperson of SADC, has selected Friday, January 31st as the date for the subject to be reviewed again. Our objective is to bring peace and calm to the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Instability is terrible enough. I don't believe we can say "bad, worse, worse." Any instability in the SADC area jeopardises the region's economic prosperity. Therefore, peace is really vital," Prof Murwira stated.

 He stated that the SADC leaders will meet on Friday to discuss the depth of the crisis and decide decisions.

 "You will recall that His Excellency Dr. E.D Mnangagwa released a statement on Monday condemning violence and requesting SADC to take action. So the SADC is taking action.

  "That's why there is a summit on Friday. Everything is set for the conference, and we are looking forward to resolving issues in the eastern DRC. They'll arrive at different times, but they'll surely meet on Friday," Prof Murwira said.
